USA Brings Bionic Woman Back From TV's Scrapheap

Jamie Sommers gets a makeover and a tune up for cable & network TV.

August 16, 2002 -

While plans for Universal's big budget remake of The Six Million Dollar Man have languished, USA Networks has announced a revival of the Bionic spinoff, The Bionic Woman. According to a story in today's Hollywood Reporter, the series will follow it's current success Monk in getting a second play on the ABC broadcast television network. The Bionic Woman is one of several well known television series properties owned by USA Studios/Universal Television. Other titles owned by the studio include the Bill Bixby/Lou Ferigno version of The Incredible Hulk, the original Six Million Dollar Man, The A Team and Airwolf.

The series is being brought to the screen by producers Team Todd, sisters Jennifer and Suzanne Todd, the producers of the Austin Powers film series. But don't expect to see any of the familiar faces from the original series. Team Todd swears that the new Bionic Woman will still be tall, blonde haired and blue eyed but the show will be targeted to audiences that are currently tuning in to shows like Smallville or the new Birds of Prey. Also, don't expect to see any of those often seen limbs packed with wires. "We are going to take advantage of the fact that what seemed beyond the realm of reality back when they did the original show – some of the things in terms advancement in prosthetics and in replacement limbs – are real in true life now," Suzanne Todd told The Hollywood Reporter. "I think the idea that they exist in the world today and people make use of them – not in a superhero way the way that Jaime does – is going to allow us to do something really interesting and very different than the old show."

The original Bionic Woman starred Lindsay Wagner and ran from 1976 to 1977, starting on ABC then moving to NBC for it's third season.

USA Wants to Rebuild 'Bionic Woman'

LOS ANGELES - USA Network is looking to add to the growing list of butt-kicking TV women by developing a new take on the 1970s series "The Bionic Woman."

If development proceeds smoothly, the new series could be on the air by summer 2003.

The original show, a spinoff of "The Six Million Dollar Man" that aired on ABC and NBC from 1976-78, starred Lindsay Wagner as Jaime Sommers, the one-time fiancee of bionic man Steve Austin (Lee Majors) who got her own cyborg parts after a skydiving accident. Like her male counterpart, she used her powers on covert missions for the government.

"'The Bionic Woman' is an old title that is ripe for reinvention," Jeff Wachtel, USA's executive vice president for series and longform programming, tells The Hollywood Reporter. "One thing that's special about it is it's really an action show, and that's something we're looking for."

The new "Bionic Woman" will be produced by sisters Jennifer and Suzanne Todd ("Memento," the "Austin Powers" movies), and is close to signing up a writer for the project.
